Running for Fred's Team

Hello. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Devon Brady, and this year I will be running the New York City Marathon as a member of Fred's Team. Fred's Team was established by New York City Marathon founder Fred Lebow to raise funds for cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Lebow started Fred's Team in 1991 after having been treated for brain cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. Since then, Fred's Team members have raised over 32 million dollars to support cancer research through their participation in races around the world.

Howard Gobioff died while being treated for lymphoma at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in March of 2008. I only met Howard a few times myself, but his brother Neil is married to my sister Gianna, and the Gobioffs have been a part of my family for at least a dozen years.

A few months after Howard's passing I started looking into running the New York City Marathon and I read about the fund raising efforts of Fred's Team. I was immediately struck by the coincidences. The New York City Marathon runs through all five boroughs of the city that Howard loved and Fred's Team was established to raise funds for the institution where Howard spent his final days.

A few weeks ago I stood in the living room of Howard's amazing Manhattan apartment and looked south to the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge where I will be lining up with 40,000 other runners on the morning of November 2, 2008. The next morning I put on my shoes and ran a 23 mile route that took me into Brooklyn and back before heading up the west side of Manhattan and coming back south through Central Park and the madness of Times Square. It was easy for me to see why Howard loved New York, and I realized that this race would be like no other. Not only could it change my life, but it has the potential to change the lives of so many other people.
